Statkraft supplies a further 300 GWh of green electricity to Opterra
Statkraft, one of the largest producers of renewable energy in Europe, and Opterra, one of Germany’s leading cement manufacturers, have entered into another Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for the supply of green power from onshore wind and solar energy. The PPA follows a wind power supply agreed in 2021 and enables Opterra to further transition its plant operations to a renewable energy supply.
Opterra, a subsidiary of the CRH Group, is driving its commitment to sustainability with another green power PPA. Statkraft will supply an additional 300 gigawatt hours (GWh) of electricity from renewable sources to Opterra’s plants in Karsdorf (Saxony-Anhalt) and Wössingen (Baden-Württemberg): 15 GWh of wind power will flow from April 2022 to June 2023, and around 30 GWh of solar power will be provided annually from July 2023 to December 2032.
Statkraft and Opterra had agreed in December last year to enter into a green power PPA with a term of four years (2022 to 2025) and a total supply volume of 120 GWh of wind power. With the additional annual supply of around 30 GWh of green electricity, which corresponds to the electricity consumption of around 7500 four-person households per year, Opterra will be able to cover up to 20% of the cement plants’ annual electricity requirements.
The wind power is generated in wind farms that no longer receive EEG subsidies. The PPA thus enables the economic continued operation of these de-subsidised wind farms. The solar electricity is supplied from Statkraft’s solar portfolio and thus directly supports the expansion of renewable energies in Germany.
