On the occasion of the Handelsblatt Energy Summit, Philip Nuyken, Managing Director Politics of the German Lime Industry Association, comments on the necessity of a CCS core law for the industry.
“The energy-intensive raw materials industry is looking at the last week of the Bundestag session with great concern. Large lime companies such as Lhoist are linking investments worth billions to the pending Carbon Dioxide Storage and Transportation Act (KSpTG),” says Philip Nuyken. “Without the law, there is no opportunity for investment decisions and climate protection, while rising CO₂ costs are a burden on competitiveness.”
Philip Nuyken warns: “If the law is not passed, it will cost our companies hundreds of millions of euros. A delay to Lhoist Germany's largest CCS project “Everest” alone will cost the company well over 100 million euros a year. Money that could be better invested locally. A CCS core law is needed for industries with unavoidable emissions such as the lime and cement industries.”
“We are appealing to the parties in the Bundestag to give the green light to the KSpTG for industry. CDU party leader Friedrich Merz has already repeatedly pointed out the necessity of the red-green legislative proposal. The parties' election manifestos support CCS as a climate protection instrument,” continued Philip Nuyken. “The KSpTG is an investment facilitation law and costs the state nothing. From the perspective of the affected industry, it is therefore incomprehensible that a CCS core law has not yet been passed.”
