TAIHEIYO ENGINEERING

The Taiheiyo Engineering company

Taiheiyo Engineering is based in Tokyo/Japan. The company offers a wide range of services: geological surveys, quarry planning and development works, cement plants and their components, building materials and inorganic product plants, powder handling and processing plants as well as recycling plants. Beside these engineering services the company also offers consulting services regarding geological investigation, material analysis, feasibility study, conceptual design, project tender preparation, design clarification and supervision and plant diagnosis.

The Taiheiyo Engineering Corporation goes back to the year 1976, today the enterprise is formed from a merger of Onoda Engineering, Chichibu Engineering and Asano Tech. In total 170 employees are working for this company. A parent company – Taiheiyo Cement – was established in 1998 formed by Onoda, Chichibu and Nihon Cement.

The editorial staff of ZKG Cement Lime Gypsum had the opportunity to talk with Mr Daijiro Suzuki, General Manager, Overseas Sales Dept., Taiheiyo Engineering Corporation about Taiheiyo Engineering, its strengths, special direction, and future plans.

Development of the company from its foundation until today

Taiheiyo Engineering succeeds to all technologies and know-how which Taiheiyo Cement has acquired through toil and hardship for the past more than 100 years. In addition, Taiheiyo Engineering has the right to utilize all the techniques developed by more than fifty affiliates of Taiheiyo Cement. The technologies, know-how and techniques are of a very wide range such as cement, mining, chemical, civil & architectural engineering etc.

Also, the company developed and supplies a number of famous technologies:

– Developed by Onoda Cement: OK Mill (with Kobe Steel), O-SEPA, RSP (Reinforced Suspension Preheater)

– Developed by Chichibu Cement: CK Mill (with Kawasaki Heavy Industries), SF (Suspension preheater with Flash furnace (with IHI))

– Developed by Nihon Cement: DD (Dual combustion and Denitration) Calciner, Decolorizer (for white cement)

In 1990s, the Japanese cement industry faced price down and cost up.  As a result, waste recycling (alternative fuels and raw materials utilization) has accelerated in the Japanese cement industry for cost reduction. However, waste recycling has a harmful effect on cement plant operation, for example, coating problems caused by chlorine and sulfur, heat loss/production loss caused by moisture etc. To minimize such impacts, Taiheiyo Engineering and Taiheiyo Cement have developed the following technologies.

– Taiheiyo Chlorine Bypass System (for chloride)

– TCS (Taiheiyo Coating Solution) System (for sulfur)

– TMP (Taiheiyo Multi-Purpose) Burner (for Low NOx)

– Taiheiyo Two-Stage Combustion System (for De-NOx)

– Taiheiyo Thermal Reactor (for utilizing sewage sludge and waste plastics)

Especially the  “Taiheiyo Chlorine Bypass System” has been supplied as over 100 sets (including upgrading and on-going projects) worldwide. Recently, almost all cement plants in South Korea, which have been increasing waste recycling rapidly, have introduced/plan to introduce our system. “And we have developed the “Taiheiyo Thermal Reactor”. This equipment is applicable for various uses, such as drying sewage sludge (high moisture), gasifying waste plastics etc. In addition, we provide a “Plant Diagnosis Service”. We dispatch our engineers to the customer’s cement plant for site survey, and analyze measuring & operation data, clarify the existing problems and causes, and offer the countermeasures for the problems, operation optimization, energy saving, upgrading, effective utilization of wastes etc. in the detailed report, depending on our customer’s requests”, explains Daijiro Suzuki.

From the foundation, the company had participated actively in a lot of projects in Japan as well as the world for setting up new cement plants and building material plants in greenfield as well as reconstruction/improvement of those existing plants.

However, start-up companies have become influential for new plant construction business in the world. So, their business has shifted from new plant construction to the existing plant modification/environmental measures for production capacity expansion, energy saving, wastes recycling etc.
