Sub-Saharan upswing continues

At the moment, the increase in cement production on the African continent is predominantly taking place in the Sub-Saharan area. This market report discusses the current developments, presents an overview of production capacity expansions and focusses on the leading countries of Nigeria, South Africa and Ethiopia.

1 Introduction

With an average per-capita cement consumption of 92 kg, the Sub-Saharan area of Africa is lagging far behind North Africa, whose average consumption is 553 kg. However, the countries situated south of the Sahara are catching up fast. While this area’s share in Africa’s total cement production of 133.2 million tons per year (Mta) was only 48 Mta or 36.5 % in 2008 [1], it had increased to 71.3 Mta or 43.6 % of 163.7 Mta by 2011.
