The battle of challenges

Dear readers,

The challenges at present are manifold: inflation, a declining economy, trouble spots in various parts of the world ... and then there is the issue of climate crisis. All of this has an impact on the global and local construction industry and therefore also on the forecasts for the cement industry. On the one hand, the increasing sales figures, on the other hand, the rising investments to take account of CO2 reduction/neutrality.

The article “Cement market special: Latin America” by Dr Joachim Harder precisely discusses the challenges for the individual industrial centers in Latin America, which are actually positioned very differently in these difficult times. “Cement production has stagnated and for this year still no major improvements are projected”, reads the article from p. 30.

Our columnist Dr Matthias Mersmann also deals with the challenges of long-term climate protection compared to the acute crisis hotspots, which need to be dealt with in the short term. “Can we trade of the one against the other?” asks Dr. Mersmann very profoundly.

The article “Building on the edge of the abyss: New construction on the edge of a quarry” describes a very special construction project at SCHAEFER KALK‘s Hahnstätten lime works to build a new packaging complex for efficient, clean and therefore resource-saving packaging - in a very confined space. Read about the realization of this interesting project from p. 42.
