Alba and Cemex launch joint venture for biochar
The recycling service provider Alba and the building materials manufacturer Cemex are building a new plant for biochar from biogenic waste, Alce Biokohle GmbH, in Rüdersdorf to the east of Berlin. The joint project will help Cemex to reduce greenhouse gases in the production of cement. Alba and Cemex signed the founding agreement today.
Hermann Dietrich, Director Strategic Planning Central Europe: “Our cement plant in Rüdersdorf is one of the most modern in the world. As part of our master plan, the Carbon Neutral Alliance, we want to produce CO2-neutral cement here from 2030. As a climate-neutral fuel, biochar is an important factor in achieving this goal. Rapidly reducing the footprint of cement is one of the key challenges for climate protection. As a global building materials group, Cemex has accepted this challenge and its pioneering role.”
Andreas Gorkow, Head of Project Development at Alba: “The processing and recycling of biogenic waste into high-quality substitute fuel is not only active climate protection, but also an important contribution to maintaining our industrial infrastructure in Germany. The German construction industry is dependent on cement manufacturers such as Cemex. Recycling biogenic renewable raw materials is a step towards greater climate neutrality and international competitiveness.”
Alba and Cemex have maintained a close business partnership in the field of CO2-reduced substitute fuels since 2005. The Alce biocoal plant is scheduled to go into operation at the end of 2026. Alba holds 51 percent of the shares in Alce.
