1 Compressed air is needed to keep the sand (or other raw material) in the tank moving and is also fed to the block valve on the side of the tank in order to loosen the sand and make it flow

2 The new compressed air station at the Schomburg plant is equipped with two Z-series (ZE 2) low-pressure compressors for silo conveying air and three GA screw compressors for the 7-bar network (“normal” control air, at the back of the compressor room)

3 The two ZE 2 low-pressure compressors are designed for discharge pressures of about 2.5 bar gauge. At the Schomburg plant, a pressure of about 1.7 bar is adequate to unload the aggregates from the silo trucks

4 The three new GA screw compressors all feature the latest variable speed drive technology (VSD⁺). This means that
the control air needed for cylinders and pumps, for example on vacuum conveyors, is produced especially efficiently

5 The variable speed drive GA screw compressors produce the compressed air needed for the 7-bar network especially efficiently. Compared with fixed-speed compressors, the energy saving is up to 50%

6 The construction materials produced are automatically filled into sacks. The compressed air used for this process must be absolutely dry. Otherwise, products such as powder adhesive would form lumps. This would mean that tilers would be unable to work efficiently on the construction site

7 Vacuum conveyors carry the bulk materials through the piping. These machines are among the largest compressed air users at the Schomburg plant

In the past, when construction material manufacturer Schomburg of Detmold needed to unload bulk materials from trucks, the process was very loud. The silo trucks were unloaded using the truck-mounted compressors. The noise of these compressors and the exhaust fumes of the diesel engines were a considerable nuisance for employees at the plant. Now, two oil-free screw compressors from Atlas Copco supply conveying air to the unloading stations. This way, Schomburg has solved its noise problem – at the same time as improving compressed air quality and the conveying process itself.

Each day, some 125 t are fed to the silos at the plant, in addition to sacks and big bags which are transferred to the smaller hall silos. The company specializes in system construction materials and processes aggregates, mainly producing dry mortars such as mineral tile adhesives.
