Properties of alkali-activated slag cements

This article attempts to quantify the effect of the specific surface area and the particle size distribution of slag on the properties of alkali-activated slag cements. Amongst other things, the normal consistency, the bulk density, the water absorption and the compressive strength have been determined as a function of the setting time.

1 Introduction

Granulated blast furnace slag (GBFS) is an industrial byproduct of the iron production and a valuable mineral raw material. It is used in the production of different building materials. A history of more than 150 years of research and successful application has shown the great potential of using GBFS in the production of mineral binders.
