Environmental Technology Prize for Celitement®

The Special Environmental Technology Prize of the Federal German State of Baden-Württemberg has been awarded to the Celitement® environmentally compatible cement developed at Germany‘s Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). The new cement promises enormous energy savings and a probable halving of CO2 emissions, compared to conventional cement production technologies. In addition, Celitement® conserves resources, since only a third of the limestone needed for production of conventional Portland cement is necessary, and the gypsum additive can be omitted completely. The KIT scientists firstly produced Celitement® on a laboratory scale. After more than a year of intensive testing, Celitement GmbH in 2010 constructed a pilot plant, for an investment volume of five million €, on the KIT north campus. From the autumn of 2011, this plant will supply 100 kilograms of Celitement® daily. www.kit.edu
