Successful certification: Eisenhüttenstadt cement plant receives CSC sustainability certificate in gold
Cemex has had its cement plant in Eisenhüttenstadt/Germany certified in accordance with the requirements of the Concrete Sustainability Council (CSC). The plant can now boast the CSC Gold seal. The certification was prepared and supported by the Environment and Sustainability team together with colleagues on site.
As part of the audit, the auditors looked at the entire value chain as well as the social and environmental impact of the production process. With its certification system, the CSC aims to make the concrete production process, its value chain and the impact on the social and ecological environment transparent and to systematically promote sustain-able business practices in the cement, raw materials and concrete industry.
“The result of this audit according to the clear sustainability criteria of the CSC is a very pleasing confirmation of our great commitment to a sustainable production process and to our environmental and climate protection,” explains Dr Patrick Fontana, Head of Product Technology at Cemex Germany. “As part of these audits, we also receive very specific, valuable feedback that helps us at our plants to reliably achieve our ambitious sustainability targets and continue to improve.”
In addition to the cement plant in Eisenhüttenstadt, Cemex’s largest production site in Germany, the Rüdersdorf cement plant, has held the CSC Gold certificate since 2021. In addition, 13 Cemex ready-mix concrete plants throughout Germany and the Immelborn and Rogätz gravel plants have CSC Gold status. Three other ready-mix concrete plants have the silver sustainability seal. This means that Cemex has CSC certifications in both the cement and materials product areas - mineral raw materials and ready-mix concrete - and can therefore prove that it produces sustainably along the entire supply chain - from the raw material to the finished concrete.
The CSC certification introduced in 2017 is recognized by various international systems for assessing the sustainability of buildings, including BREEAM, LEED and DGNB. With many clients now investing in green buildings, having a CSC seal of approval gives builders and their building material suppliers an important competitive advantage.
CSC certification and the resulting suggestions for improvement from the auditors also help the teams at the production sites to systematically contribute to the company‘s global sustainability strategy. As part of “Future in Action”, Cemex is focusing on sustainable excellence through climate protection, circular economy and natural resource management, with the primary goal of becoming a net-zero CO2 emissions company by 2050.
The CSC was initiated by the Cement Sustainability Initiative (CSI) of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD). CSC members include companies, associations, certification bodies and institutes. Cemex is heavily involved in the CSC: The building materials company is one of the founding members.
