Holcim Germany awarded the
“Environmental Award of the Economy 2024”
Holcim receives the prestigious “Environmental Award of the Economy 2024”. The award from the Studien- und Fördergesellschaft der Schleswig-Holsteinischen Wirtschaft (Study and Promotion Society of the Schleswig-Holstein Economy) honors Holcim’s commitment to advancing climate-neutral cement production. With the construction of a new kiln line and innovative CO₂ capture technology at its cement plant in Lägerdorf, the company is setting new standards: CO₂ is captured and fed into new material cycles - an important step not only for the building materials industry on the way to climate neutrality by 2045. Holcim Germany and its cement plant in Lägerdorf were one of three companies to receive the “Environmental Award of the Economy 2024” in Kiel on Tuesday, November 12.
Since 1984, the prestigious award in the form of a bronze relief has been presented annually to up to three Schleswig-Holstein companies. The guest speaker at the event with around 200 guests was Tobias Goldschmidt, State Minister for Energy Transition, Climate Protection, Environment and Nature. The Minister praised the great commitment of the award winners: “The award-winning projects impressively demonstrated how companies take responsibility and see climate and resource protection not as an obligation, but rather as a task to shape a future worth living for all.”
Holcim Germany was honored for its “Carbon2Business” project at the Lägerdorf site, with which the company is implementing climate-neutral cement production. With the construction of a new kiln line and the use of innovative technologies, the process-related unavoidable CO₂ is captured and transferred to new material cycles for further use by other industries. One of the world’s first climate-neutral cement plants is set to go into operation in Lägerdorf as early as 2028. The Holcim Germany Group’s goal is to be climate-neutral across the entire value chain within the construction industry by 2045.
“We are proud of this award. My thanks go to the dedicated “Carbon2Business” project team made up of colleagues from Holcim and the partners Linde Engineering, Thyssenkrupp Polysius and Open Grid Europe,” says Thorsten Hahn, CEO of Holcim Germany, who accepted the award. “This project proves that innovative technologies in industry not only protect the environment, but also create new opportunities for the use of resources. CO₂ will be a scarce commodity in the future, and by capturing it and processing it into a valuable raw material, we are opening up opportunities for new value chains.”
