Radar sensors are not affected by dust

Symeo at the Bulk Material Handling Technology Conference

The 29th Bulk Material Handling Technology Conference will take place in Magdeburg/Germany on September 17 and 18, 2025. Symeo GmbH, a manufacturer of industrial radar sensors, will be part of the accompanying exhibition at the Hotel Ratswaage.

The Bulk Material Handling Technology conference series is jointly organized by the Chair of Conveyor Technology, Material Flow, and Logistics at the Technical University of Munich/Germany and the Chair of Conveyor and Material Flow Technology at Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg/Germany. Symeo is once again participating in this conference, as radar sensor technology can particularly demonstrate its advantages, such as maintenance-free operation and complete insensitivity to dust, in the field of bulk material handling technology. At this year‘s event, Symeo will present LPR-SAFE, a distance measurement system for functional safety. The system is based on a certified function block (EN ISO 13849 Performance Level d), a fail-safe Siemens PLC, and redundant distance measurement using Symeo radar sensor technology. Symeo will also demonstrate the performance and reliability of its sensors using the example of the user Holcim.

Example: Crane positioning in a cement plant

At Holcim (Switzerland) AG’s Siggenthal cement plant, an automated bridge crane picks up clinker, gypsum, and limestone and transports them to the cement grinding plant, sorted by type. Due to the high levels of dust and dirt, laser positioning of the crane bridge and trolley was not possible, and mechanical position sensors wore out quickly. Ten years ago, Symeo LPR-1DHP radar sensors were introduced and have since enabled maintenance-free operation of the bulk material warehouse with robotics software.
