NORM CEMENT

Azerbaijan’s Norm Cement increased clinker capacity

Azerbaijan’s “Norm” OJSC, which is a part of NEQSOL Holding, has successfully completed a major project to expand the clinker production capacity of the Norm Cement plant (photo) in South Caucasus. As a result, the plant’s annual clinker capacity has increased from 1.76 to 2 million tons, representing a nearly 14% growth, equivalent to an additional 240 thousand tons per year. This achievement has been made although the domestic cement supply currently exceeds the demand. However, the company continues to invest in innovations, particularly in the production of oil-well cements, which are required by the growing oil and gas industry. Norm Cement’s expansion project has been executed with international partners, including China’s BTIEC and Germany’s Gebr. Pfeiffer and Claudius Peters.

Norm Cement’s oil-well cements play an important role in ensuring the safety and reliability of wells. The company cooperates closely with international energy companies such as SLB (formerly Schlumberger) in Azerbaijan and BP (British Petrol), expanding the partnerships year by year. Currently, the specialized cements are exported to a number of Central Asian countries. In the coming years, the export potential of its oil-well cements shall be expanded. At the moment, Norm Cement is the sole producer of oil-well cements in Azerbaijan, while in 2021 becoming the first company in the South Caucasus to obtain an API certification from the American Petroleum Institute, which is the global source to provide certifications for such kind of special cements.

Henning Sasse, CEO of Norm Cement, stated: “We decided to increase the plant’s production capacity, considering the expanding infrastructure needs and export opportunities of the country and the region. Increasing the clinker production capacity of the Norm Cement plant was an important step for us, both to meet domestic demand and to expand clinker export opportunities to foreign markets. This initiative will strengthen Azerbaijan’s industrial potential by ensuring that demand for cement and clinker within the country is fully met by local production over the next 15–20 years.”
